Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope you had a lovely Easter break with your children. I can’t believe we are beginning the final term! This term is very busy and full of lots of exciting opportunities. Below is a break-down of everything we will be covering and what you need to know for the coming term.
In maths this term, our focus will be on measures and geometry. We will cover six units over the course of the term. First, we will be exploring shape, recapping the different types of angles and calculating missing angles. The children will also identify the features of a range of shapes including regular and irregular shapes and circles. Then we will move on to visualising shape which includes building 3D shapes and drawing nets for 3D shapes. After half term, we will spend a week on describing position including translation and reflection. We will look at converting between imperial and metric units of measure and finally spend some time on proportional reasoning which will include using all four operations and knowledge of measures, shape and fractions to solve problems. We will also be continuing with our daily 10-minute session of Mastering Number / Schofield and Sims to improve mental maths skills and times tables recall.
In English, we are continuing with Comprehension Bug, we will have a daily 30-minute reading session. We will also be continuing to use Spelling Shed, which we will be using alongside spelling games to practise the year 5/6 spelling list. We will still have a written test each Friday. In writing, we will continue to practise planning, drafting, and editing our writing. We will be basing most of our writing on the history topic of WW2 including Literacy Shed videos such as Beyond the Lines and a number of class texts, beginning with Our Castle by the Sea by Lucy Strange and Arctic Star by Tom Palmer. The children will write for a range of different purposes – to entertain, to inform, to persuade and to discuss.
In science, we are moving on to our final topic which is forces. The children will learn all about the force of gravity and who discovered it. They will also learn about air resistance, water resistance and friction and how levers, pulleys and gears can allow smaller forces to have a greater effect. The children will be using all five types of investigation – pattern seeking, classification and grouping, observing over time, fair testing and scientific research.
Our history topic for this term is World War 2. We will be learning about the outbreak of the war, evacuation, rationing, the role of women in the war, The Holocaust and other key events such as The Battle of France, The Battle of Britain, The Blitz, Pearl Harbour, D-Day and VE Day. We will link our history topic to geography where we will focus on locational knowledge. We will also read a range of texts based on our topic.
Our DT focus this term is food and nutrition. We will link DT to our history topic and recreate some examples of rations. We will discuss how and where ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed. In computing, we will continue to use Purple Mash.
In French, the children will be learning to talk about their hobbies and interests and after half term, will explore the seaside. In RE children will be exploring Christianity, Hinduism and what religions say when life gets hard.
Class four children have been enjoying leading Wake Up Shake Up for the rest of the school – they are also given opportunities to run sports activities on a lunch time as play leaders. Mr Swankie will continue to lead a lunch time sporting club each Tuesday and all children are welcome. He also teaches class four on a Tuesday afternoon including athletics, net and wall games and striking and fielding.
We are continuing with our reading reward scheme in Class 4, where the children are rewarded each time they read and write a reflective comment in their reading journal. When the children have read 80 times in total, they will receive a bookmark and 100 times in total they will receive a new book.
Please remember to write any notes for me in the children’s blue planners rather than reading journals. These planners are designed to promote independence and organisation.
We are going on our class residential in the final week of this half term, Wednesday 21st – Friday 23rd May, there will be an information evening held on Tuesday 6th May at 4:30pm. I will provide your child’s activity group, dorm room, activity timetable and a full kit list. I will also be able to ask any questions you may have.
